Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut Bulbul (Hemixos castanonotus), and often treated as conspecific. Isolated subspecies remotus is notably divergent, and may warrant elevation to species rank.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
flavala Blyth, 1845 - Eastern Himalayas from northern India (eastern from Uttar Pradesh, including southern Assam hills) east to south-eastern Tibet, north-western Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan), and north-eastern Bangladesh (Sylhet).
bourdellei Delacour, 1926 - Southern China (southern Yunnan), eastern Myanmar, north-eastern Thailand and northern and central Laos.
cinereus (Blyth, 1845) - Southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, northern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cinereous Bulbul (Hemixos cinereus).
connectens (Sharpe, 1887) - Northern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-winged Bulbul (Hemixos connectens).
