Subspecies
Subspecies suahelicus intergrades clinally with intermedius in Malawi and northern Mozambique. Poorly marked subspecies bensoni (described from lower Meru Forest, in Kenya) is treated as a synonym of suahelicus; similarly, katangae (extreme south-eastern DRCongo) synonymized with intermedius.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
suahelicus Reichenow, 1904 - Southern Somalia and central and eastern Kenya (Meru and Chuka forests, Mt Kenya, coast) south to northern Mozambique.
intermedius Gunning & Roberts, 1911 - South-eastern DRCongo, Zambia, Malawi and northern Mozambique south to northern Botswana, Zimbabwe and north-eastern South Africa (south to eastern KwaZulu-Natal); isolated population in south-western Angola.
terrestris Swainson, 1837 - Swaziland and eastern and southern South Africa (western KwaZulu-Natal southern along coastal fringe to western Cape).
rhodesiae Roberts, 1917 - South-western Angola, Zambia, south-eastern DR Congo , south-western Tanzania to northern Botswana, northern Zimbabwe and north-eastern Mozambique.
