Subspecies
May be rather distantly related to the "Pycnonotus capensis complex" and the "Pycnonotus cafer complex". Subspecies davisoni differs morphologically and possibly vocally from others and merits further study to assess its taxonomic status.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
davisoni (Hume, 1875) - Southern and eastern Myanmar (Arakan south to R Sittang). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pale-eyed Bulbul (Pycnonotus davisoni).
eous Riley, 1940 - Southern China (southern Yunnan), Thailand and Indochina.
finlaysoni Strickland, 1844 - Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim southern from R Sittang), southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
