Nest
A hammock of moss, lichen and cobwebs, near the end of a conifer twig.

7 - 10; white or pale buff, finely speckled with buff-brown.
Subspecies
Regulus ignicapillus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Common Firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) and Madeira Firecrest (Regulus madeirensis) in line with AERC TAC (2003). Gender agreement of Common Firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) follows David and Gosselin (2002a).
Canary Is subspecies teneriffae (with, by implication, newly described subspecies ellenthalerae) has been treated variously as a subspecies of Common Firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) or as a separate species.
The following 15 subspecies are recognised:
regulus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Europe and western Siberia.
coatsi Sushkin, 1904 - Central Siberia (east to Altai and L Baikal area).
inermis Murphy & Chapin, 1929 - Western and central Azores (Flores, Faial, São Jorge, Pico, Terceira).
azoricus Seebohm, 1883 - São Miguel, in eastern Azores.
sanctaemariae Vaurie, 1954 - Santa Maria, in south-eastern Azores.
ellenthalerae Päckert, Dietzen, Martens, J, Wink & Kvist, 2006 - Western Canary Is (La Palma, El Hierro).
teneriffae Seebohm, 1883 - West-central Canary Is (La Gomera, Tenerife).
buturlini Loudon, 1911 - Crimea, Asia Minor and Caucasus.
hyrcanus Zarudny, 1910 - Northern Iran.
tristis Pleske, 1892 - Tien Shan Mts.
himalayensis Bonaparte, 1856 - Eastern Afghanistan east to western Himalayas.
sikkimensis Meinertzhagen, R & Meinertzhagen, A, 1926 - Eastern Nepal and eastern Himalayas east to north-central China (north-eastern Qinghai east to south-western Gansu).
yunnanensis Rippon, 1906 - Central China (southern Shaanxi and Sichuan south to south-eastern Xizang and northern Yunnan) and north-eastern Myanmar.
japonensis Blakiston, 1862 - South-eastern Siberia (Amur-Ussuri region), Sakhalin I, Kuril Is and Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu).
