Does not breed in Australia. Breeds south and south-eastern Siberia, north-eastern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, the Indian subcontinent, Asia.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Northern House Martin (Delichon urbicum) and sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
cashmeriense (Gould, 1858) - Himalayas from Pakistan east to south-central China. Winters northern India and south-eastern Asia.
dasypus (Bonaparte, 1850) - South-central and south-eastern Russia (Khamar-Daban, Ussuriland, Sakhalin) and Kuril Is south to north-eastern China, Korea and Japan. Winters south-eastern Asia south to Greater Sundas and Philippines.
nigrimentale (Hartert, 1910) - Southern and eastern China and Taiwan. Winters south-eastern Asia.
cashmiriense (Gould, 1858) - Himalayas (south-eastern Afghanistan to India and western China).
Similar Species
Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans) which has tinges of blue in its plumage, a red forehead, and an off-white rump.
