Botswana and Zimbabwe east to southern Malawi and south to southern South Africa (except north-west); has bred Zambia and Namibia (possibly regular); single breeding report from central Angola requires confirmation. In non-breeding season also north to north-central Angola and south-eastern DRCongo and west to Namibian coast.

Forms a superspecies with Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Red-chested Swallow (Hirundo lucida), Angola Swallow (Hirundo angolensis), Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena), Tahiti Swallow (Hirundo tahitica) and Ethiopian Swallow (Hirundo aethiopica). Birds in north of range sometimes separated as subspecies ambigua on basis of smaller wings and tail, but variation clinal.
