Subspecies
Parus inornatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into inornatus and ridgwayi and both placed in the genus Baeolophus following AOU (1998). The name ridgwayi replaces griseus following AOU (2000).

Forms a superspecies with Black-crested Titmouse (Baeolophus atricristatus), Juniper Titmouse (Baeolophus ridgwayi) and Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). Was until recently treated as conspecific with Juniper Titmouse (Baeolophus ridgwayi).

Nominate subspecies and affabilis intergrade in south-western California (USA). Subspecies mohavensis sometimes merged with affabilis. Other proposed subspecies, all in USA, include sequestratus (south-western Oregon and north-western California) and kernensis (drainage basin of R Kern and adjacent eastern slopes of Sierra Nevada, in California), both synonymized with nominate, and transpositus (south-western California west of the deserts), merged with affabilis.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

inornatus (Gambel, 1845) - South-western USA (south-western Oregon south to south-western and south-central California).
affabilis Grinnell & Swarth, 1926 - South-western California and extreme north-western Mexico (northern Baja California).
mohavensis (Miller, AH, 1946) - South-eastern California (Little San Bernardino Mts).
cineraceus (Ridgway, 1883) - Western Mexico (southern Baja California).
