Subspecies
Nominate subspecies and phillipsi intergrade in north-western Mexico. Subspecies caliginosus often merged with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- vandevenderi (Rea, 1986) - South-western USA (central Arizona, extreme south-western New Mexico).
- phillipsi (van Rossem, 1947) - South-western USA (south-eastern Arizona) and north-western Mexico (eastern Sonora, Chihuahua, northern Sinaloa, northern Durango).
- wollweberi (Bonaparte, 1850) - Central and southern Mexico (Sinaloa and Durango and central Nuevo LeĂ³n south to Michoacán and Puebla).
- caliginosus (van Rossem, 1947) - South-western Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca).
