Subspecies
Birds of this species in south-western Nigeria of uncertain subpecies, provisionally included in ussheri.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
ussheri Reichenow, 1905 - Southern Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana, south-western Togo and south-western Nigeria.
rushiae (Cassin, 1855) - South-eastern Nigeria and western and central Cameroon, south to Gabon.
bedfordi Ogilvie-Grant, 1904 - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
denti Ogilvie-Grant, 1907 - South-eastern Cameroon, northern and south-western PRCongo, north-western Angola, central and eastern DRCongo and western and eastern Uganda; single record from south-central Central African Republic.
