Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Grey-breasted Wood-Wren (Henicorhina leucophrys), but geographical and altitudinal overlap too extensive to justify such treatment. Possibly represents three distinct species, with separation of prostheleuca and pittieri groups. Subspecies prostheleuca intergrades with smithei in south-eastern Mexico (extreme southern Quintana Roo) and northern Belize.
The following 13 subspecies are recognised:
decolorata Phillips, AR, 1986 - Eastern Mexico (San Luis Potosí south to northern Veracruz and northern Puebla).
prostheleuca (Sclater, PL, 1857) - Southern and eastern Mexico (from Veracruz and northern Chiapas) east to Belize.
smithei Dickerman, 1973 - Southern part of Yucatán Peninsula south to Guatemala.
tropaea Bangs & Peters, JL, 1927 - Honduras and Nicaragua.
costaricensis Dickerman, 1973 - Northern and eastern Costa Rica.
pittieri Cherrie, 1893 - South-western Costa Rica and western Panama.
alexandri Phillips, AR, 1986 - Eastern Panama and immediately adjacent north-western Colombia.
darienensis Hellmayr, 1921 - Eastern Panama (Darién) and western Colombia (south to Baudo Mts).
inornata Hellmayr, 1903 - Western Colombia (south of R San Juan) south to extreme north-western Ecuador.
albilateralis Chapman, 1917 - Western Colombia (lower Cauca Valley, middle Magdalena Valley).
eucharis Bangs, 1910 - Western Colombia (Valle).
leucosticta (Cabanis, 1847) - Eastern and southern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana (one record), and northern Brazil (south to northern Pará).
hauxwelli Chubb, C, 1920 - Tropical zone of upper Amazonia in southern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vaupés), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru.
