Subspecies
Different authorities have suggested that this species should be placed variously in Troglodytes, Henicorhina or Thryothorus. However, in the absence of a convicing argument it is currently retained in its own monotypic genus. Population from southern Quintana Roo to central Belize and northern Honduras may be separable as subspecies australis, with hawkinsi (Coyoles, Honduras) a synonym.
Proposed subspecies grisescens (eastern Mexico) apparently based on soot-discoloured specimens, and thus doubtfully valid.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
pacifica (Nelson, 1897) - Western Mexico (Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero).
leucogastra (Goul, 1837) - Lowlands of eastern Mexico (southern Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosí south to northern Oaxaca).
centralis Phillips, AR, 1986 - Southern Mexico from northern Puebla east to central Veracruz.
