Subspecies
Thryothorus maculipectus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Thryothorus maculipectus, Thryothorus colombianus, Thryothorus paucimaculatus and Thryothorus sclateri by Stotz et al. (1996). Thryothorus sclateri has been recognised as a distinct species following SACC (2005), but colombianus and paucimaculatus have been lumped with Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus) following SACC (2005).
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus) or Rufous-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius rutilus), or with both, but all differ substantially in plumage and in song. Subspecies paucimaculatus suggested by some as meriting rank of full species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
columbianus Chapman, 1924 - Colombia, on western slope of central Andes (in Valle) and, disjunctly, western slope of eastern range (in Cundinamarca). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Colombian Wren (Pheugopedius columbianus).
paucimaculatus (Sharpe, 1882) - Western Ecuador (Manabí south to Loja). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Speckle-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius paucimaculatus).
sclateri Taczanowski, 1879 - R Marañón drainage in extreme southern Ecuador and northern Peru (Cajamarca).
