Subspecies
In the past, suggested as possibly conspecific with Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- sonorae van Rossem, 1930 - Southern Sonora and northern Sinaloa, in north-western Mexico.
- pallidus (Nelson, 1899) - Central Sinaloa and western Durango south to Jalisco and north-western Michoacán.
- lawrencii (Ridgway, 1878) - María Madre I (Tres Marías Group), off Nayarit (western Mexico).
- magdalenae (Nelson, 1898) - María Magdalena I (Tres Marías Group).
- grandis (Nelson, 1900) - Drainage of R Balsas (southern México, Morelos, south-western Puebla, northern Guerrero), in western Mexico.
- felix Sclater, 1859 - South-western Mexico from south-eastern Jalisco south to western Oaxaca.
