Subspecies
Substantial vocal and plumage differences between lowland and highland populations in Venezuela suggest the possibility that more than one species are involved.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
ridgwayi (von Berlepsch, 1889) - Eastern Venezuela (southern Delta Amacuro, eastern Bolívar) and western Guyana (west of R Essequibo).
coraya (Gmelin, 1789) - Guyana (east of R Essequibo), Suriname, French Guiana and adjacent northern Brazil (east of Manaus).
caurensis (von Berlepsch & Hartert, 1902) - Eastern and south-eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela (southern Bolívar, southern Amazonas) and northern Brazil (east to Manaus).
obscurus (Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1947) - Auyán-tepui, in eastern Bolívar (eastern Venezuela).
barrowcloughianus (Aveledo & Perez, 1994) - Tepuis of south-eastern Bolívar (Roraima, Cuquenán), in south-eastern Venezuela.
griseipectus (Sharpe, 1882) - Eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru (north of R Marañón) and adjacent extreme western Brazil.
albiventris (Taczanowski, 1882) - Northern Peru (eastern slopes of Andes in San Martín).
amazonicus (Sharpe, 1882) - Eastern Peru south of R Marañón (southern Loreto south to Huánuco).
cantator (Taczanowski, 1874) - Central Peru (eastern Junín).
herberti (Ridgway, 1888) - Northern Brazil south of Amazon (from R Tapajós east to R Tocantins and western Maranhío).
