The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
pallidior Phillips, AR, 1986 - South-western Canada (southern British Columbia) and western USA (south to north-eastern Utah and north-western Colorado).
conspersus Ridgway, 1873 - South-western USA (from northern Nevada and central Colorado) south to north-western Mexico (south to central Baja California).
albifrons (Giraud, 1841) - Southern USA (south-western Texas) and northern Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León).
meliphonus Oberholser, 1930 - North-western Mexico (western Sonora and west-central Chihuahua south to Sinaloa and Durango).
