Subspecies
Probably closest to Hylorchilus. Other described subspecies, all from USA, are griseus (Yakima County, in southern Washington), punctulatus (Placer County, in east-central California) and polioptilus (Chisos Mts, in Texas), but plumage variations of these are not constant, and no clear-cut geographical boundaries are apparent.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallidior Phillips, AR, 1986   -  South-western Canada (southern British Columbia) and western USA (south to north-eastern Utah and north-western Colorado).
  • conspersus Ridgway, 1873   -  South-western USA (from northern Nevada and central Colorado) south to north-western Mexico (south to central Baja California).
  • albifrons (Giraud, 1841)   -  Southern USA (south-western Texas) and northern Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León).
  • meliphonus Oberholser, 1930   -  North-western Mexico (western Sonora and west-central Chihuahua south to Sinaloa and Durango).
  • croizati Phillips, AR, 1986   -  Southern Baja California.
  • cantator Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Central Mexico (Nayarit south to Michoacán).
  • mexicanus (Swainson, 1829)   -  Mexican plateau from Durango and Jalisco south to Colima and Oaxaca, also disjunctly in south-western Chiapas.
  • griseus Aldrich, 1946   -  South-western Canada and north-western USA.
  • punctulatus Ridgway, 1882   -  Esst-central California (western USA).
