Subspecies
Some authors divide subspecies into three informal groups: humilis; nominate; and the four remaining southernmost subspecies. Subspecies humilis and nigricaudatus intergrade in southern Mexico (Chiapas).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • humilis (Lesson, 1838)   -  Western Mexico (Colima east to western Chiapas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sclater's Wren (Campylorhynchus humilis).
  • rufinucha (Lesson, 1838)   -  Eastern Mexico (Veracruz and adjacent northern Oaxaca).
  • nigricaudatus (Nelson, 1897)   -  Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and western Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
  • castaneus Ridgway, 1888   -  Interior of Guatemala east to Honduras and Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
  • capistratus (Lesson, 1842)   -  Pacific coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua south to north-western Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
  • nicoyae A. R. Phillips, 1986   -  Nicoya Peninsula, in north-western Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
  • xerophilus (Griscom, 1930)   -  Motagua Valley (Guatemala). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
  • nicaraguae (Miller & Griscom, 1925)   -  Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus capistratus).
