Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,800 - 3,350 m.

Range (Guide)

Afghanistan (B) (NB), India, Nepal, Pakistan.

North-eastern Afghanistan (Nuristan and Kohistan south to Safed Koh), northern Pakistan (south to extreme northern Baluchistan, and western Himalayas east from Chitral) and Kashmir. Also north-western Nepal (Humla, Mugu, Jumla and Dolpo east to Phoksumdo Tal, south to Surkhet).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), Chestnut-vented Nuthatch (Sitta nagaensis), Indian Nuthatch (Sitta castanea), Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch (Sitta cinnamoventris) and Burmese Nuthatch (Sitta neglecta). Intermediate in many respects between Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) and Indian Nuthatch (Sitta castanea)/Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch (Sitta cinnamoventris) and has often been treated as conspecific with one or other of these, but differs in vocalizations and plumage (especially undertail-coverts). Occurs within 5 km of Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch (Sitta cinnamoventris) in northern Pakistan (Murree Hills). One alarm call (like that of Garrulus jay) and nest construction suggest possible affinity with Western Rock Nuthatch (Sitta neumayer) and Eastern Rock Nuthatch (Sitta tephronota).
