The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
fuscatus (Vieillot, 1808) - Bahamas (southern from Eleuthera I), Turks and Caicos Is, Beata I (off southern Hispaniola), Mona I, Puerto Rico, Virgin Is and northern Lesser Antilles (Antigua).
densirostris (Vieillot, 1818) - Lesser Antilles (Montserrat and Guadeloupe south to Martinique).
klinikowskii Garrido & Remsen, 1996 - St Lucia, in south-central Lesser Antilles.
bonairensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1948 - Bonaire I, in Netherlands Antilles.
