Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a monotypic genus Allenia and such treatment supported also by recent mtDNA work, but further research needed. Listed delimitations of subspecies uncertain, and not congruent with recent mtDNA data. Further study is required.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
hypenema (Buden, 1993) - Northern Lesser Antilles from St Martin, Saba and St Barthélémy south to Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante.
fusca (Statius Muller, 1776) - Central and southern Lesser Antilles (Dominica, Martinique and, disjunctly, Grenada).
schwartzi (Buden, 1993) - St Lucia, in south-central Lesser Antilles.
vincenti (Kratter, AW & Garrido, 1996) - St Vincent, in southern Lesser Antilles.
