Subspecies
Genus may be most closely related to Margarops. Contrary to earlier opinion, appears not to be close to Ramphocinclus. Probably forms a superspecies with Grey Trembler (Cinclocerthia gutturalis), and previously considered conspecific. Subspecies tremula possibly merits treatment as a separate species.

Proposed subspecies pavida (St Kitts) and sola (Montserrat) considered indistinguishable from that subspecies.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • tremula (Lafresnaye, 1843)   -  Northern Lesser Antilles (Saba, Barbuda, St Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe).
  • ruficauda (Gould, 1836)   -  Dominica, in central Lesser Antilles.
  • tenebrosa Ridgway, 1904   -  St Vincent and Grenada, in southern Lesser Antilles.
  • pavida Ridgway, 1904   -  Lesser Antilles (Montserrat and adjacent north-western Leeward Islands).
