Habitat
Humid to semi-arid scrubby woodland and forest edge, including seasonally flooded and deciduous forest and secondary growth, littoral forest on cays.
Yucatán Peninsula south to southern Campeche (Mexico), northern Guatemala and northern Belize, including Cozumel I and other nearby Caribbean reefs.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss and fragmentation due to tourism and housing development and conversion to coconut plantations is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes placed in genus Dumetella, to which present species certainly appears to be closely related. Separation of populations on Cozumel I (off north-eastern Yucatán Peninsula) as subspecies cozumelana appears unwarranted.
