Subspecies
Hybrids with Red-billed Oxpecker (Buphagus erythrorynchus) recorded in Zimbabwe.
Proposed subspecies megarhynchus (described from L Kivu, in eastern DRCongo) and somewhat larger haematophagus (from Andara, on R Okavango, in north-eastern Namibia) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
africanus Linnaeus, 1766 - South-western Mauritania and Senegal east to west, southern and eastern Sudan, north-western Ethiopia and western Eritrea, also locally south-western Angola (southern from Huíla) and northern and north-eastern Namibia and, in east, very locally from Uganda and Kenya south to Zambia, Malawi, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, central Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa.
