Vagrant to Japan, Thailand.

Introduced to Argentina, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Philippines (B), Singapore (B).

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

cristatellus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern and south-eastern China (southern from southern Shaanxi).
brevipennis Hartert, 1910 - Central and southern Laos and Vietnam (except south), and Hainan I (southern China).
formosanus (Hartert, 1912) - Taiwan.
