Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
contra (Linnaeus, 1758) - Extreme eastern Pakistan (Lahore area), northern and central India (east to western Assam, south to extreme northern Karnataka and northern Andhra Pradesh), southern Nepal and Bangladesh.
sordida (Ripley, 1950) - Northern Assam.
superciliaris (Blyth, 1863) - North-eastern India (Manipur), Myanmar (except southern and east) and south-western China (south-western Yunnan).
floweri (Sharpe, 1897) - Southern and eastern Myanmar, southern China (south-eastern Yunnan), Thailand (except east), north-western Laos and Cambodia.
jalla (Horsfield, 1821) - Sumatra, Java and Bali. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Javan Pied Starling (Gracupica jalla).
