Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and moist forest, dry savanna.

Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sâo Tomé e Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia.

Subspecies
Subspecies bailundensis intergrades with nominate in northern Angola (Malanje).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • chrysonotis Swainson, 1837   -  From Senegal eastern along coast to southern Togo.
  • splendidus (Vieillot, 1822)   -  Southern Benin, Nigeria, Prí­ncipe I (in Gulf of Guinea) and central and southern Cameroon east to southern Sudan and western Ethiopia, south to PRCongo, northern Angola, central DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
  • lessoni (Pucheran, 1858)   -  Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • bailundensis (Neumann, 1920)   -  Northern and eastern Angola, southern DRCongo and Zambia.
