Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis. Many subspecies defined primarily according to size differences based on small samples, and require reassessment. Some doubtfully distinct, e.g. leptorrhyncha perhaps better merged with pachistorhina.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • affinis (Blyth, 1846)   -  North-eastern India (southern Assam), Bangladesh and south-western Myanmar.
  • tytleri (Hume, 1873)   -  Coco Is (off southern Myanmar), Andaman Is, and northern Nicobars (Car Nicobar).
  • albiris Abdulali, 1967   -  Central and southern Nicobars.
  • strigata (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra (including most satellites), Java and western Borneo.
  • altirostris (Salvadori, 1887)   -  Simeluë, Banyak Is and Nias I (off north-western Sumatra).
  • leptorrhyncha Stresemann, 1913   -  Pini I, in northern Batu Is (off western Sumatra).
  • pachistorhina (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Batu Is (except Pini) and Mentawai Is (off western Sumatra).
  • enganensis (Salvadori, 1892)   -  Enggano I, off south-western Sumatra.
  • heterochlora (Oberholser, 1917)   -  Anamba Is and Natuna Is, between Malay Peninsula and Borneo.
  • panayensis (Scopoli, 1783)   -  Philippine Is and northern Sulawesi.
  • sanghirensis (Salvadori, 1876)   -  Talaud Is and islands of Sangihe, Siau, Ruang, Tahulandang and Biaro (off north-eastern tip of Sulawesi).
  • eustathis (Oberholser, 1926)   -  Eastern Borneo.
  • alipodis (Oberholser, 1926)   -  Panjang, Maratau and Derawan, off eastern Borneo.
  • gusti Stresemann, 1913   -  Bali.
