Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest.

Guam (B), Micronesia [Federated States of] (B), Northern Mariana Islands (B), Palau (B).

Habits
Often in flocks. Bold and noisy.

Voice
Highly varied, with loud slurred whistles and gurgling notes. Song an elaboration of call notes with no consistent pattern. Typical note is a harsh, rolling 'brleeep'.

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • aenea Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931   -  Northern Northern Mariana Is (Asuncion, Agrihan, Pagan, Alamagan).
  • guami Momiyama, 1922   -  Southern northern Marianas (Saipan, Tinian, Rota, Guam).
  • orii Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931   -  Palau Is (Kayangel, Babelthuap, Koror, Garakayo, Ngesebus, Peleliu, Ngabad, Angaur).
  • kurodai Momiyama, 1920   -  Yap, in extreme western Caroline Is.
  • anga Momiyama, 1922   -  Caroline Is (Ulithi, Fais, Faraulep, Woleai, Ifalik, Lamotrek, Chuuk, Lukunor, Nukuoro).
  • ponapensis Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931   -  Pohnpei (including Kapingamarangi Atoll, 740 km Swest of main island), in eastern Carolines.
  • opaca (Kittlitz, 1833)   -  Kosrae, in extreme eastern Carolines.
