Habits
Often in flocks. Bold and noisy.

Voice
Highly varied, with loud slurred whistles and gurgling notes. Song an elaboration of call notes with no consistent pattern. Typical note is a harsh, rolling 'brleeep'.

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

aenea Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931 - Northern Northern Mariana Is (Asuncion, Agrihan, Pagan, Alamagan).
guami Momiyama, 1922 - Southern northern Marianas (Saipan, Tinian, Rota, Guam).
orii Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931 - Palau Is (Kayangel, Babelthuap, Koror, Garakayo, Ngesebus, Peleliu, Ngabad, Angaur).
kurodai Momiyama, 1920 - Yap, in extreme western Caroline Is.
anga Momiyama, 1922 - Caroline Is (Ulithi, Fais, Faraulep, Woleai, Ifalik, Lamotrek, Chuuk, Lukunor, Nukuoro).
ponapensis Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1931 - Pohnpei (including Kapingamarangi Atoll, 740 km Swest of main island), in eastern Carolines.
opaca (Kittlitz, 1833) - Kosrae, in extreme eastern Carolines.
