Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest.
Solomon Islands (B) (NB), Vanuatu (B) (NB).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Destruction of lowland and hill forests by logging is the nain threat.

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- maxwellii Forbes, HO, 1900 - Nendo (Santa Cruz), in west-central Santa Cruz Is.
- zelandica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Vanikoro, in southern Santa Cruz Is.
- rufipennis Layard, EL, 1881 - Banks Is and northern and central Vanuatu (south to Efaté).
