Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland.
Angola, Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Somalia, Swaziland.
Rarity Status

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- livingstonii (Tristram, 1868) - Central Kenya south to Botswana and eastern South Africa (south to northern eastern Cape).
- neseri Macdonald, 1952 - Angola and northern Namibia.
- pileata (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern Namibia and western South Africa.
