Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,850 - 2,200 m, occasionally 800 - 3,000 m.

Unknown to Nepal (B).

Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Callene.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- frontale Blyth, 1842 - Eastern Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan.
- orientale (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) - North-eastern India (eastern Assam), south-central China (south-western Sichuan) and northern Indochina.
