Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist shrubland, temperate grassland. From 1,500 - 5,200 m, occasionally up to 5,500 m.

Afghanistan (B), Azerbaijan (B) (NB), Bhutan, China (mainland), Georgia (B), India, Iran [Islamic Republic of], Kazakhstan (B), Kyrgyzstan (B) (NB), Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia (Asian) (B), Russia (Central Asian) (B) (NB), Russia (European) (B), Tajikistan (B), Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

Vagrant to Armenia, Saudi Arabia.

Subspecies
Species name is latinized Greek adjective, and must therefore agree.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

erythrogastrus (G�ldenst�dt, 1775) - Greater Caucasus Mts. Non-breeding Transcaucasia and Iran.
grandis (Gould, 1850) - Northern L Baikal area, and from Altai and western Mongolia south to eastern Afghanistan, north-western and central China, and in Himalayas. Non-breeding also northern India and eastern and southern China.
