Subspecies
Genus often merged into Cercotrichas. Subspecies form two geographically interdigitating groups, north-eastern "white-winged group" and "red-backed group", these possibly differing also in voice and habitat. Geographical variation partly clinal; subspecies ovamboensis, munda and zambesiana perhaps invalid. Described subspecies simulator (from southern Mozambique) synonymized with nominate.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucoptera (Rüppell, 1845)   -  South-eastern Sudan, southern Ethiopia, northern Somalia and northern Kenya.
  • eluta (Bowen, 1934)   -  Southern Somalia and north-eastern Kenya.
  • brunneiceps (Reichenow, 1891)   -  Central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • vulpina (Reichenow, 1891)   -  Eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania.
  • sclateri (Grote, 1930)   -  Central Tanzania.
  • zambesiana (Sharpe, 1882)   -  Southern Sudan, northern and eastern DRCongo, Uganda and western Kenya south to eastern and southern Zambia, eastern Zimbabwe and northern Mozambique.
  • munda (Cabanis, 1880)   -  Southern Gabon east to western DRCongo and south to central Angola.
  • ovamboensis (Neumann, 1920)   -  Southern Angola and northern Namibia east to south-western Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
  • leucophrys (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Southern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique south to northern and eastern South Africa.
