Subspecies
Proposed subspecies grimwoodi (known only from type locality in Mwinilunga District, in northern Zimbabwe) merged with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

polioptera Reichenow, 1892 - Southern Sudan, western and southern Uganda, western Kenya, north-western Tanzania, Burundi, north-western and eastern Angola, extreme north-western Zambia and southern DRCongo.
nigriceps Reichenow, 1910 - Sierra Leone, northern Liberia, western Ivory Coast, central and eastern Nigeria and adjacent central Cameroon.
tessmanni Reichenow, 1921 - Eastern Cameroon.
