Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Erithacus. Vocalizations very similar to those of Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope). Subspecies tschebaiewi appears intermediate between nominate subspecies and Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope), suggesting that a single species may be involved. Geographical variation somewhat clinal.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
ballioni (Severtsov, 1873) - Tien Shan south to southern Tadjikistan (Pamir range) and north-eastern Afghanistan. Non-breeding southern Asia.
pectoralis (Gould, 1837) - South-eastern Afghanistan and north-western Himalayas east to central Nepal.
confusa (Hartert, 1910) - Eastern Nepal and Sikkim.
tschebaiewi (Przevalski, 1876) - Northern Kashmir, south, eastern and north-eastern Tibetan Plateau, central China (northern and north-western Sichuan, north-western Yunnan) and northern Myanmar. Non-breeding north-eastern India. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chinese Rubythroat (Calliope tschebaiewi).
