Dense undergrowth in damp areas within riparian broad-leaved evergreen forest. From 100 - 600 m.

Population
Estimated population is 80,000 - 90,000 (2010).

Status NT
Predation by introduced mongooses (Okinawa) and weasels (Nakanoshima) and habitat loss resulting from commercial logging are the main threats.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies subrufa (Yaeyama Is), described from non-�breeding individuals, is synonymous with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

komadori (Temminck, 1835) - Northern Ryukyu Is (Tanegashima south to Tokunoshima).
namiyei (Stejneger, 1887) - Okinawa. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Okinawa Robin (Larvivora namiyei).
subrufus Kuroda, 1923 - Southern Ryukyu Islands (Ishigaki, Iriomote and Yonaguni).
