Breeds south-eastern Sweden (mainly Gotland and Öland), and from eastern France and southern Germany east to central European Russia (Moscow) and Ukraine, south to Italy, Sicily and northern Macedonia. Non-breeding south-central and southern Africa.

Often regarded as conspecific with Semi-collared Flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) but differences in ecology and morphology suggest that treatment as separate species is more appropriate. Hybridizes with European Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) in areas of sympatry in central and eastern Europe.
