Forms a species group with White-browed Forest-flycatcher (Fraseria cinerascens). They overlap geographically, but differ significantly in habits and voice.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • kelsalli Bannerman, 1922   -  Extreme south-western Guinea and southern Sierra Leone.
  • prosphora Oberholser, 1899   -  Liberia, central and southern Ivory Coast and southern Ghana.
  • ocreata (Strickland, 1844)   -  Central and southern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and southern Cameroon east to western Uganda, south to extreme northern Angola and central DRCongo.
