Great Shortwing (Heinrichia calligyna) [XC601724]
by Mike Nelson from Wolo, Kolaka Regency, South East Sulawesi, Indonesia (subsong, very quiet subsong)
Subspecies
Genus very close to Brachypteryx, but retained on basis of larger size and some colour characteristics. Subspecies differ considerably in female plumage; simplex notably distinct from other two, suggesting possibility that it may merit full species status, but further evidence required. Subspecies picta also suggested as perhaps meriting split. Possibly an additional, undescribed subspecies exists in north-central Sulawesi, and apparently reported from eastern Sulawesi. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
simplex Stresemann, 1931 - Northern Sulawesi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Minahasa Shortwing (Heinrichia simplex).
