Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 600 - 2,100 m.
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Timor-Leste (B) (NB), Vietnam.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- nipalensis Moore, F, 1854 - Himalayas, western and northern Myanmar and southern China (south-western Sichuan, western Yunnan).
- carolinae La Touche, 1898 - Southern and south-eastern China, eastern Myanmar, north-western Thailand and northern Indochina.
- langbianensis Delacour & Greenway, 1939 - Southern Indochina.
- wrayi Ogilvie-Grant, 1906 - Central and southern Malay Peninsula.
- leucophris (Temminck, 1827) - Sumatra, Java and Lesser Sundas.
