Subspecies
Subspecies anthracinus distinctive, to extent that species status may be appropriate, but situation complicated, and its relationship to Great Thrush (Turdus fuscater) needs exploration. Subspecies conradi often subsumed in nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
conradi Salvadori & Festa, 1899 - Central Ecuador south to central Peru.
chiguanco Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1837 - Coastal Peru, western Bolivia and extreme northern Chile.
anthracinus Burmeister, 1858 - Southern Bolivia and north-eastern Chile south to west-central Argentina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sombre Thrush (Turdus anthracinus).
