Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Lesotho.

Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with African Thrush (Turdus pelios) and Bare-eyed Thrush (Turdus tephronotus). Hybridization with Olive Thrush (Turdus olivaceus) claimed in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Proposed subspecies chobiensis (from northern Botswana and western Zimbabwe) considered indistinguishable from verreauxi, and peripheris (eastern South Africa) from nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • tropicalis Peters, W, 1881   -  South-eastern Burundi and Tanzania south to central and eastern Zambia, Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
  • verreauxii Bocage, 1870   -  Angola and south-eastern DRCongo south to north-eastern Namibia, western Zambia, northern Botswana and western Zimbabwe.
  • libonyana (A. Smith, 1836)   -  Eastern and southern Botswana east to southern Mozambique, south to northern and north-eastern South Africa and Swaziland.
  • peripheris Clancey, 1952   -  Eastern South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal), south-eastern Swaziland, and southern Mozambique.
