Proposed subspecies levyi (Alberta east to northern Michigan and Wisconsin) and pulichorum (western Maryland south to northern Georgia) considered inseparable from salicicola and nominate, respectively. Subspecies subpallidus sometimes merged with salicicola.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
salicicola (Ridgway, 1882) - South-western and south-central Canada and western USA. Non-breeding Brazil.
subpallidus (Burleigh & Duvall, 1959) - North-western USA. Non-breeding Brazil.
fuscescens (Stephens, 1817) - South-eastern Canada and eastern USA. Non-breeding Brazil.
fuliginosus (Howe, 1900) - Extreme eastern Canada (southern Quebec east to Newfoundland). Non-breeding Brazil.
