Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 600 - 3,000 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies harrisoni (from Oaxaca, in southern Mexico) regarded as exhibiting characters within the range of variation of ovandensis. Similarly, ecuadoreanus (Andes of western Ecuador) within range of variation of maculatus. Subspecies maculatus, however, is itself weakly differentiated and barely sustainable.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • ovandensis Brodkorb, 1938   -  Southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Chiapas).
  • dryas (Gould, 1855)   -  Western Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
  • maculatus (P. L. Sclater, 1858)   -  Western Venezuela, eastern Colombia, western and eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Bolivia.
  • blakei Olrog, 1973   -  Southern Bolivia south to northern Argentina (Jujuy, Salta).
  • harrisoni Phillips, AR & Rook, 1965   -  Oaxaca (south-western Mexico).
