Habitat
Boulder-strewn shorelines, tussock grassland, fern-bush and wet heath.

Range (Guide)
St Helena (B) (NB).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010).

Status NT
Predation by Black Rats Rattus rattus, translocations of birds between islands, resulting in hybridisation, are the main threats.

Nest
A rough cup of woven tussock fronds and grass stalks with some moss and leaves, placed on or just above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 2 - 4, usually 2 - 3


Young
Fledge: 20 days

Subspecies
Presumably derived from South American Turdus (resembles immature Austral Thrush (Turdus falcklandii)), but adaptation to insular life includes modified tongue, and maintenance of separate genus appears appropriate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • eremita (Gould, 1855)   -  Tristan da Cunha.
  • gordoni (Stenhouse, 1924)   -  Inaccessible I.
  • procax (Elliott, HFI, 1954)   -  Nightingale I and satellites (Middle I, Stoltenhoff I).
