Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry grassland, dry savanna, dry forest, arable land. From 800 - 1,400 m.
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Saudi Arabia (B), Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Yemen (B).
Vagrant to Oman.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- rufocinereus (Rüppell, 1837) - Eritrea, Ethiopia, northern Somalia, eastern Uganda, Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
- sclateri Hartert, 1917 - South-western Arabian Peninsula.
