Nest
Flimsy cup composed of twigs, usually in a pine tree, lined with moss and lichen.
Eggs (Guide)
5 - 6; smooth, glossy, pale bluish-grey, speckled with black.
Subspecies
Appears to be most closely related to Japanese Waxwing (Bombycilla japonica).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
garrulus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Breeds northern Sweden, far northern Norway, northern Finland and northern Russia (south of tree-line) east to approximately Ural Mts. Non-breeding south to Poland, the Balkans, Ukraine, irregularly farther south.
centralasiae Poliakov, 1915 - Breeds central and eastern Russia south of tree-line from approximately Ural Mts east to Sea of Okhotsk and Kamchatka, south to Altai Mts, L Baikal and lower Amur Valley. Non-breeding south to Kazakhstan, northern China and Japan, rarely to northern Indian Subcontinent, southern China and Taiwan.
pallidiceps Reichenow, 1908 - Breeds north-western and north-central North America. Non-breeding east to south-eastern Canada (Newfoundland) and south to central and north-eastern USA, irregularly farther south.
