Habitat
Closed-canopy of primary rainforest. May also have a greater tolerance for degraded habitat than previously believed. From sea-level - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Cameroon (B) (NB), Equatorial Guinea (B) (NB), Gabon (B) (NB), Nigeria (B) (NB).

Unknown to Congo [The Democratic Republic of the].

Equatorial forest belt in south-eastern Nigeria, western and southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea including Bioko I (Fernando Póo), Gabon and south-western PRCongo.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction through logging and conversion to agriculture, trade, human disturbance at breeding sights resulting from ecotourism, are the main threats.

Food
Mainly invertebrates, including, grasshoppers, beetles, weevils, earthworms, slugs and snails. Also small vertebrates, primarily frogs and lizards, and fruits and flower buds.

Nest
A half-cup of dried mud, impregnated with dry grass fibres and dead leaves, located in caves and rock-foces of cliffs, under bridges. In colonies where nest sites are limited.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 1 - 3, usually 2
Incubation: 21 - 24 days

Young
Fledge: 24 days

Subspecies
No subspecies.

May form a superspecies with White-necked Rockfowl (Picathartes gymnocephalus).

Similar Species
White-necked Rockfowl (Picathartes gymnocephalus) is very similar but ranges do not overlap.
