Subspecies
Taxonomic position of genus uncertain. Species sometimes referred to by specific name of virgatus. Subspecies sylvicola sometimes elevated to species rank on basis of differences in plumage and voice, and has been suggested that, for same reasons, pelvicus should also be treated as a separate species. A review of whole complex required.
The following 12 subspecies are recognised:
sylvicola Jerdon, 1839 - Western Ghats of India. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malabar Woodshrike (Tephrodornis sylvicola).
pelvicus (Hodgson, 1837) - Eastern Himalayas from northern India east to north, north-eastern and south-western Myanmar, also eastern India (Eastern Ghats).
jugans Deignan, 1948 - Eastern Myanmar, southern China (south-western Yunnan) and north-western Thailand (south to northern Tak).
latouchei Kinnear, 1925 - Southern and south-eastern China (western and south-eastern Yunnan, Guizhov, Guangxi, northern Guangdong, central and eastern Fujian).
hainanus Ogilvie-Grant, 1910 - Northern Laos, northern Vietnam and Hainan I.
verneyi Kinnear, 1924 - South-eastern Myanmar (south to northern Tenasserim) and south-western Thailand.
