Eastern and southern Tanzania, in regions of Dodoma, Morogoro and Iringa (Kiboriani Mts and Wota Mts, Ukaguru Mts, Uluguru Mts, and Rubeho and Iringa highlands south to highlands near L Malawi); also extreme north-western Malawi (Misuku Hills).

Subspecies
Until very recently was included as part of nominate subspecies of Forest Batis (Batis mixta). Related also to Cape Batis (Batis capensis), the range of which it approaches without overlap in northern Malawi. All form superspecies that includes Reichenow's Batis (Batis reichenowi) and Woodwards' Batis (Batis fratrum), and probably also Margaret's Batis (Batis margaritae) and Ruwenzori Batis (Batis diops).
