Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops poliolophus), and Yellow-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops alberti) possibly part of same group. Other proposed subspecies are adamauae (described from Kontcha, in north-central Cameroon), synonymized with concinnatus; melanopterus (from Fer Liban, in south-eastern Ethiopia), synonymized with vinaceigularis; and angolicus (from Malanje, in northern Angola), synonymized with poliocephalus.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
plumatus (Shaw, 1809) - Senegal east to northern Cameroon.
concinnatus Sundevall, 1850 - Central Cameroon east to central and south-western Sudan, north-western Ethiopia, north-eastern DRCongo and northern Uganda.
cristatus Rüppell, 1836 - Eritrea, north, western and central Ethiopia, south-eastern Sudan, eastern Uganda and north-western Kenya.
vinaceigularis Richmond, 1897 - Somalia, eastern and southern Ethiopia, northern and eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
poliocephalus (Stanley, 1814) - Southern Uganda and central and southern Kenya south to south-eastern DRCongo, Angola, Namibia, Botswana and north-eastern South Africa.
talacoma Smith, A, 1836 - Central,s Kenya, Uganda to Angola, northern Namibia, northern, eastern Botswana, Zimbabwe and north-eastern South Africa.
